You're expecting a child, maybe your first, and everything must be perfect. You buy books, schedule birthing classes, create a diet and exercise plan -- perhaps you invest in a home fetal doppler device. Available for purchase or rental, home fetal monitoring devices allow soon-to-be parents to check on the baby's pulse, monitoring for any irregularities.

If you are using or considering using a home fetal doppler device, there are several things that you should know.
-The most important thing to remember is that a home monitoring system does not replace the professional opinion and specialized care available from your obstetrician. If you feel a change in movement or sense that something may be wrong, you should still seek medical attention -- regardless of readings you take on a fetal doppler system.
-Another point to consider is your level of experience with the machine. Even if a fetal monitoring system is not giving false readings, the results can be misleading. For example, it's possible for a machine to pick up readings from blood flow through the placenta or the mother's own veins.

In England, one woman waited two days to seek medical opinion on reduced fetal movement after conducting her own test and finding everything to be normal. The infant spent its first eight weeks in the neonatal care unit.
-Finally, remember that your doctor is on your side. Many have scoffed at obstetricians who are reluctant to recommend a home monitoring system, claiming they are simply hoping to protect themselves from liability in the event of a medical malpractice suit. Most likely, your doctor is simply concerned about your ability to use the machine and render accurate readings, potentially delaying a much-needed medical visit.

If you decide to use a home fetal doppler device, just remember -- it does not replace your doctor. Also, even the best home monitoring system won't guarantee an uneventful pregnancy.

The life and health of an unborn child is too important to hinge solely on the results of a home fetal doppler device. If you have questions about the health of your baby, consult your obstetrician. And remember: whether you rely on the advice of your doctor or the results of an in-home test, if your child is the victim of a birth injury you have the right to pursue legal action if medical malpractice or a defective medical device led to your child's injuries. Consult an attorney experienced in fetal and newborn injury cases for help with your situation or answers to your questions.
