Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo on Friday took charge of his first game since having surgery to treat prostate cancer, taking to the dugout for his side’s Liga game at home to Levante to a rapturous reception from the Sanchez Pizjuan crowd.
News of Berizzo’s diagnosis came the morning after Sevilla’s thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Liverpool in the Champions League group stage on Nov. 21. He underwent surgery seven days later.

Before the game, Berizzo paid a surprise visit to the club’s training ground to give a team talk to his players before joining them and the club’s president Jose Castro and sporting director Oscar Arias at the team’s hotel.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Berizzo is unlikely to be present for the match at Real Sociedad next Wednesday as he has been advised against travelling by plane so soon after the operation.

Berizzo’s assistant Ernesto Marcucci is expected to take charge for that game, as he has for the team’s previous four games while the head coach was recovering from the operation.

Sevilla finished second in Champions League Group E behind Liverpool and will face Manchester United in the last 16. They are fifth in La Liga with 28 points from 15 games, 11 points adrift of leaders Barcelona.
