Vernon Co. crash on Friday, Dec. 8

VIROQUA, Wis. (WXOW) - A former La Crosse resident who now lives in South Dakota is killed in a crash between an SUV and a dump truck Friday afternoon.

The Vernon County Sheriff's Office said that Laurel Elizabeth Wicks, 47, of Cavour, SD, formerly of La Crosse, was driving northbound in her 2005 Honda Pilot which collided with the rear of a large dump truck around 2:45 p.m.

The collision happened along Highway 35 near Mohawk Valley Road.

The northbound dump truck, driven by Bobby E. Bendel, 59, of La Crosse, was stopped and waiting to turn left off the highway and into a driveway.

Wicks' vehicle had heavy damage on the left side of the vehicle from the collision trapping her inside the vehicle.

The sheriff's office said that Wicks did not survive the collision. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Vernon County Coroner Betty Nigh.

Highway 35 was closed for several hours. The Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit came to the scene. An inspector performed a post-crash inspection of the dump truck which is standard procedure when a commercial motor vehicle is involved.

The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff's Office.
