Renx Albania, a subsidiary of RenX Italia, filed a request with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy to install wind park Pogradec of 120 MW. The developer is preparing wind power projects of 1.3 GW in total in Albania, 334 MW in North Macedonia and 2.4 GW in Romania.

Albania relies almost entirely on hydropower in domestic electricity production. The solar power sector is growing. It is the government’s main diversification pillar. According to the latest statistics published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the commissioning of the Karavasta facility last year, of 140 MW in peak capacity, increased the total to 163 MW.

Conversely, there are no wind turbines in the country yet. The government awarded support for projects totaling 222.5 MW in July in its first auction for the technology.

RenX Italia, founded in 2021, wasn’t among the winners, but it is planning 1.3 GW in total in Albania. It holds 70% of Renx Albania. The firm applied with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy for the construction of a wind park called Pogradec, of 120 MW.

In Southeastern Europe, RenX is active in Romania, Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria

The location is in the southeast, near Korça, and the project has received no subsidies. The developer is registered in Vicenza in Italy, but runs its operations from Wrocław, Poland.

According to its website, RenX Italia has over 7 GW in its project pipeline. The wind power portfolio includes 334 MW in North Macedonia and 2.4 GW in Romania, where it is also developing 130 MW of photovoltaics.

The company, established by Clear Energy and Syma Group, is also active in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.

In Albania, the joint venture has received preliminary opinions from Transmission System Operator (OST) on the proposed grid connections for five projects including Pogradec: Devoll (450 MW), Korça (190 MW), Erseka (200 MW) and Pogradec2 (280 MW).

In the rest of the region tracked by Balkan Green Energy News, Slovenia has the weakest wind power sector. The country hosts only three turbines, with 3 MW in combined capacity.
