SXU to host free kidney health screenings

"We want to encourage our entire SXU community to get screened—kidney disease is silent, meaning that most people don't feel any symptoms, so they don't even realize they are at risk. Kidney disease can strike anyone—it doesn't matter how young or old you are, so we encourage students, staff and faculty to get take advantage of this free screening. Bring your family members or friends to get screened too—this event is open to our entire extended community!" said Cyndi Grobmeier, director of faculty development.

Each year, kidney disease kills more people than breast or prostate cancer, but while the majority of Americans can recite the common tests for breast and prostate cancer, many do not know the risk factors and tests that could keep them off dialysis and the transplant waiting list. Because kidney disease often develops slowly with few symptoms, it can frequently go undetected until it is very advanced. Sigma Theta Tau and Students for H.O.P.E. are proud to bring this life-saving screening opportunity to the SXU campus community.

"It is vitally important to regularly monitor our internal organs by taking measures of precaution and being regularly tested. Many diseases may arise with silent symptoms, which can possibly lead to long-lasting effects on our bodies. The most effective method to prevent or slow down the progression of kidney-related illnesses is early preventative care. We are honored to bring these free kidney and diabetic services to Saint Xavier University to ensure health protection of our communities. These services are completely open to the public, and we welcome everyone to attend. It might just save your life," said Deana Elhit, president of Students for H.O.P.E.

The screening will be offered by the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois' KidneyMobile®, the nation's only custom mobile unit that travels across the state screening individuals for kidney disease and its two main causes: diabetes and high blood pressure. In addition to a free screening, attendees will also be able to talk privately with a nurse or doctor about their results.
