Beaufort Memorial to offer free skin cancer screenings in Okatie through Mobile Wellness Unit

OKATIE, S.C. – In addition to the regularly offered free and low-cost health screenings offered at Beaufort Memorial Mobile Wellness Unit events, the nonprofit hospital will be offering skin cancer screenings in Okatie on May 16 in collaboration with a local dermatologist.

Beaufort Memorial’s 40-foot healthcare mobile wellness unit brings free and low-cost health screenings to businesses, local neighborhoods, health fairs, schools, churches and other locations around the Lowcountry.

On Friday, May 16, the mobile unit will be parked at the Beaufort Memorial Okatie Medical Pavilion (122 Okatie Center Blvd. North) offering free skin cancer screenings in collaboration with a local dermatologist – no appointment necessary.

In addition, board-certified, fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Heidi Harrington, who leads Beaufort Memorial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, will be on site at the mobile unit for initial cosmetic and skin care consultations. The practice is located on the second floor of the Okatie Medical Pavilion.

If you have fair skin, had multiple sunburns during childhood or have a family history of skin cancer, you should make regular exams a priority. You should also perform skin self-exams regularly, looking out for suspicious spots or moles that are asymmetrical, have uneven borders, include different colors or shades, have a diameter of larger than a quarter-inch, or have changed in size, shape or color.

Other free services offered by the Beaufort Memorial mobile unit team include blood pressure checks for hypertension (high blood pressure), blood sugar checks for diabetes and clinical breast and prostate cancer exams. For a nominal $10, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests and lipid profiles to check cholesterol levels are also available.
