Ambassador Soreca: Bosnia and Herzegovina is undeniably European

"The Eternal Flame in Sarajevo stands as a symbol of the sacrifices made in the liberation of Europe from fascism. I often pass by it on my way to the Europe House, located just behind this monument.

Each time I walk past, I’m reminded that the European Union is not merely a system of institutions and rules. Above all, it is an idea — a response to the horrors of fascism and war through unity, cooperation, and peace, as articulated by Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950.

This is the vision we celebrate on Europe Day.

At the core of this vision are people – improving their lives through greater security and protection, and providing more opportunities for them and their families.

Europe Day pays tribute to our progress, but it also urges us to complete the project envisioned by Europe’s founders through its enlargement.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is undeniably European — not only geographically at the heart of Europe, but also culturally and historically. Yet today, the country’s European path is blocked as a result of a deep political and constitutional crisis.

The European path remains the most effective framework for ensuring stability, prosperity, and reconciliation. It is also the best starting point for addressing complex, sensitive, and longstanding issues.

Many people in Bosnia and Herzegovina are already taking advantage of the opportunities offered by various EU projects and programmes. Political actors can increase these opportunities by making progress on the European path.

The vision of a united Europe is precious and more needed than ever. Let us continue working together to make it a reality.
