Indiana State couldn't survive a six-run second inning by host Missouri State and lost to the Bears 10-3 in Missouri Valley Conference baseball Saturday night at Hammons Field.
The Sycamores (22-28 overall, 10-13 MVC), who also lost to MSU 6-3 on Friday, will try to salvage one game in this series when the squads meet again at 2 p.m. EST Sunday.
On Saturday, a two-run homer to left field by Tyler Epstein and a solo shot by Curry Sutherland highlighted the home team's second-inning outburst.
ISU put its first dent in the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Jeremy Martinez led off with a single and Jorge Cartagena launched a two-run bomb to left to slice the deficit to 6-2.
The visitors added another run in the top of the fifth when Eli Gipson raced home on a throwing error, pulling within 6-3.
But Missouri State tallied a pair of runs in the fifth — on a two-run homer to left by Caden Bogenpohl — and two more in the sixth to pad its cushion to 10-3.
Starting pitcher Michael Yusypchuk picked up the win for the MVC-leading Bears (27-21, 17-6), lasting five innings and allowing two earned runs. Grant Parson (2-4), the first of six ISU hurlers, took the loss.
Offensively, Nomar Garcia went 2 for 4 and Alex Nevils contributed a double for the Sycamores.
Entering Sunday, Indiana State sits in seventh place in the 10-team MVC standings.
