The trend of Canadian travellers avoiding visiting the US continues amid trade uncertainty and concerns about harassment by border and immigration officials. A Statistics Canada report shows that in April, the preliminary number of international arrivals (returning Canadian residents and non-residents combined) to Canada by air and automobile was 4.5 million, down 15.2% from April 2024. This was the third consecutive month of year-over-year declines.
Canadian-resident return trips by air edge down due to drop in US trips
Although Canadian-resident return trips from all overseas countries increased (1.3 million; +9.9% from April 2024), return trips by air from the United States continued to decline in April 2025 582,700 returning residents; down -19.9%.
Auto traffic down in both directions
In April, the number of Canadian-resident return trips by automobile from the United States totalled 1.2 million, a steep decline (-35.2%) from the same month in 2024. April 2025 marked the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines.
Americans are visiting Canada in fewer numbers as well. In April, the number of US-resident trips to Canada by automobile (820,700) showed a decline by 10.7% from the same month in 2024. This was the third consecutive month of year-over-year declines.
I’d be interested to see if we are stopping the winter trek south altogether, or just finding alternate locations for sun and sand? Are places like Cuba and Mexico seeing increases?
We had a nice spot in Florida for years, but I sold it when Trump was first elected. And although we still have friends in the US, I have absolutely no desire to visit. I just find the experience to be more stressful than therapeutic.
I really have to wonder what is actually going on down there. Is this what they want? It remains a mystery.
