ESA launches deep tech centre in Switzerland to drive EU space innovation

In a landmark move set to transform Europe’s space innovation landscape, the European Space Agency (ESA) has launched the European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre (ESDI) in Switzerland.

This cutting-edge initiative marks ESA’s first physical footprint in the country and underlines the growing strategic importance of deep tech in unlocking new frontiers of space exploration and Earth-based applications.

Strategically located at the Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare in Villigen, ESDI emerges from a close partnership between ESA and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), one of Europe’s premier research facilities.

With its proximity to PSI, the new centre is ideally positioned to harness Switzerland’s globally recognised strengths in robotics, nanotechnology, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology.

In a speech at the inauguration ceremony, Josef Aschbacher, Director General of ESA, said: “The inauguration of the European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre is a testimonial to ESA’s and Switzerland’s joint commitment to push innovation and drive economic growth.

“ESDI will contribute to strengthening the European deep tech ecosystem and promoting Swiss and European leadership in this domain.”

Building Europe’s deep tech ecosystem

The creation of ESDI signals a strong commitment by both ESA and Switzerland to deepen their collaboration and lead in the development and commercialisation of advanced space technologies.

At the heart of ESDI’s mission is the acceleration of deep tech adoption across sectors. Through specialised platforms focused on quantum technologies, advanced data systems, and novel materials, ESDI aims to bridge the gap between scientific breakthroughs and real-world applications.

The first of these platforms, ESA Phi-Lab Switzerland, is already operational and integrated within PSI’s organisation.

This initiative provides a fertile ground for interdisciplinary collaboration, facilitating research that can propel Europe into a leadership position in the rapidly evolving deep tech arena.

Driving economic growth and innovation

The new centre is not only a hub for cutting-edge research but also a catalyst for economic growth.

By fostering synergies between ESA, academia, startups, and private sector R&D, ESDI will enhance Europe’s global competitiveness in space technology.

The centre also plays a vital role in addressing the skills gap by supporting education and training programmes that nurture the next generation of deep tech professionals.

In alignment with ESA’s 2040 strategic vision, ESDI aims to empower local and national innovation ecosystems.

This includes developing regional capabilities, stimulating space-related job creation, and accelerating the integration of space solutions into the broader European economy.

A growing network of deep tech collaboration

The inauguration also marked another milestone with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between ESA and the Deep Tech Nation Switzerland Foundation.

This partnership is set to strengthen ties between the European space community and Switzerland’s thriving deep tech sector.

Together, they will work to build a robust and resilient ecosystem that supports the co-creation of technologies designed for space missions and their transformative use on Earth.

Pioneering the future of space technology

The European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre is more than just a new facility – it’s a visionary step toward a more innovative, competitive, and connected Europe.

By uniting deep tech capabilities with the strategic goals of space exploration, ESDI is poised to deliver breakthrough solutions that will define the next era of science, industry, and sustainable development across the continent.

As the centre begins its mission, it sets the stage for Europe to lead in the global deep tech revolution, both on Earth and far beyond.
