Peruvian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Apavit) Chairman Ricardo Acosta stated that the new Jorge Chavez International Airport —the gateway to the Peruvian capital, Lima— will be the largest and most modern air terminal in Latin America, which has drawn the attention of major airlines interested in arriving in Peru.

"We have a mega terminal that is attracting global attention due to its great capacity, as it is capable of receiving 30 million tourists per year. It has top-tier infrastructure with state-of-the-art technology, which makes it the most modern airport in Latin America," he told Andina News Agency.

The executive noted that the construction of the new terminal, which will be operational starting June 1, was designed with greater organization in mind.

"It has a large number of establishments in various commercial areas such as food, retail stores, and mini hotels, which will be available to visitors; in other words, every detail has been considered so that tourists feel as comfortable as possible," he specified.

Acosta mentioned that during the trial run of the new Jorge Chavez Airport, some points and observations were identified and have since been addressed.

"This will be an important incentive for a large number of new airlines to want to come to Peru, and for those already operating in the country to increase their frequencies, especially to and from Europe, considering that flights from the Old Continent are in high demand," Acosta indicated.

Consolidated hub

For the chairman of Apavit, a guild that just celebrated its 78th anniversary, the new Jorge Chávez International Airport adds to the recently-inaugurated Chancay Megaport, consolidating Peru as a true regional hub —a major goal pursued through the construction of these terminals.

"The key objective of these new infrastructures was to turn Peru into a regional hub, and we are already on that path. Obviously, there are still certain aspects and complementary investments that will surely be made, including security, which is a fundamental issue; but we are confident that Peru is already on track to becoming a true regional hub," the executive stated.

According to Acosta, the development and operation of both terminals will be crucial to the country’s economic performance in the coming years.

"The economy will definitely continue to grow, and with these two strategic terminals, that growth will be consolidated, but it also depends on us boosting complementary measures and actions so that these investments achieve their objective," Acosta emphasized.

The guild representative asserted that the airport is the entry point and first contact that tourists have with Peru.

"In this case, the new airport terminal provides an excellent image of our country," he concluded.
