Body found in Delaware River in Northampton County amid weekend of water rescues; police seek help identifying man

Investigators are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who was found dead Sunday in the Delaware River in Northampton County.

State police said in a news release Friday that the body was found about 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of Slateford Road near Arrowhead Island in Upper Mount Bethel Township.

The man was described as white or Hispanic, about 5-foot-10; he was wearing an extra large Under Armour t-shirt and size 34×30 Wrangler pants. He had a brown braided leather belt with gold buckle and size 12 Redwing work boots, according to the release.

The man also had three black ink tattoos: a Fox Racing logo on the upper right arm, a religious cross on the inner right forearm that had the words “Death Before Dishonor,” and a Native American headdress on the upper left arm.

The incident Sunday came during an active period for water rescues in the Lehigh Valley and the surrounding regions over the Memorial Day holiday.

A New Jersey man died Sunday after jumping into a Poconos lake to help two people who fell into the water when their kayak overturned, according to the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.

A GoFundMe was launched to help the man’s family after his death. As of Friday, about $15,000 of its $50,000 goal had been reached. Those who wish to donate may do so at https://gofund.me/c342dfad.

Easton Fire Chief Henry Hennings said the fire department was sent out to the Delaware River Sunday afternoon to help Phillipsburg Fire Department. Crews needed to help seven people stuck on a disabled vessel, he said.

Northampton County spokesperson Jessica Berger said in addition to that incident, crews from the county were called to help with two water rescues over the weekend in Monroe County. Lehigh County did not get any water rescue requests, according to a county official.

A number of emergency responders in Carbon County were called early Tuesday morning to the Lehigh River in East Penn Township to help rescue people there.

In Bucks County, a park ranger died after his boat capsized the afternoon of May 23 in Tyler State Park. The park was closed for most of the holiday weekend while officials investigated. The ranger’s body was found Sunday afternoon.
