On May 30, former U.S. President Joe Biden made his first public appearance since announcing his prostate cancer diagnosis. The event took place at the Veterans Memorial Park in New Castle, Delaware, in honor of Memorial Day.
In his speech, Biden recalled his late son Beau, who served in the Delaware Army National Guard and participated in military operations in Iraq. He avoided political topics, focusing instead on the importance of unity within the military despite political differences in the country.
After the speech, Biden spoke with reporters, assuring that he feels well and that his treatment is encouraging.
“We expect to be able to overcome this.”
He also announced that he has already started a treatment course, which includes taking pills.
When asked about accusations of concealing a worsening condition while in office, Biden joked:
“You see, I’m mentally incapacitated and can’t walk.”
The former president also responded to criticism from Democrats who doubted his readiness to run for a second term:
“Then why didn’t they run against me? I could have beaten them.”
This marks Biden’s second public appearance since announcing his illness. Earlier, he attended his grandson’s graduation in Connecticut.
Joe Biden’s Diagnosis
On May 18, 2025, Biden’s spokesperson announced that the politician was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. However, the disease proved to be sensitive to hormone therapy, allowing for effective control of its progression.
Donald Trump, the current U.S. president, wished Biden a speedy recovery. However, his son, Donald Trump Jr., expressed doubts about how Biden’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, could have missed her husband’s illness.
Accusations of Concealment
Donald Trump claimed that someone tried to hide information about Biden’s health, suggesting that the prostate cancer diagnosis and cognitive decline might have been concealed during his presidency.
He also questioned the competence of the doctor who examined Biden at the Walter Reed center and expressed doubts about the former president’s mental abilities.
In response, Biden’s spokesperson, Chris Meagher, denied these accusations, noting that Biden’s last PSA antigen test, which is the standard for detecting prostate cancer, was conducted in 2014, with the next test only taking place in 2025.
