That result allowed them to add their second goal to zero in three home games, but they remain last in Group G with five matches to go. Against the Netherlands, the challenge will be even greater, especially considering that Malta has failed to score in their last four matches.

Malta have lost their six matches against the Netherlands in all competitions. Malta have conceded 28 unanswered goals in their six matches against Oranje. In their last three matches, Malta finished the match with only 10 men and one player received a red card in each of them.

Malta reaches the World Cup qualification after a positive performance in the 2024-25 League of Nations, where it scored seven points in four games and secured a place in the promotion/relegation playoffs, where it could face Luxembourg in March 2026.

However, their attention is focused on the current FIFA World Cup qualifying round, in which, as the lowest ranked team in the group, their main objective is to compete with dignity rather than aspiring to a historic qualification for their first major tournament.

The Netherlands now focus their efforts on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, having been eliminated from the UEFA Nations League in the quarter-finals against Spain on a penalty shoot-out. With a presence in four of the last five World Cups, Ronald Koeman’s team is looking to overcome a qualifying group that includes Poland, Finland, Lithuania and Malta.

"We have trained hard and the group is motivated. It’s a prestigious match, but our mentality does not change according to the opponent. I don’t agree with the idea that this is our toughest game. All games should be treated equally. The games which, in theory, seem 'easier', can often be the most difficult".
