Latvia has achieved a historic success on the global stage, being elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term for the first time in its history. This decision, made at a meeting of the UN General Assembly, marks an important milestone for Latvian diplomacy and strengthens the position of the Baltic states in the system of international relations.

The election to the Security Council is the result of many years of dedicated work by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic missions. The campaign, under the motto “Together for Peace and Resilience,” emphasized the country’s commitment to the principles of international law, democracy, and human rights. Having received an overwhelming majority of votes, Latvia secured broad support from the international community.

In its work on the Security Council, Latvia intends to focus on strengthening the international legal order based on the UN Charter.
