SIX. WELCOME BACK. A MANHUNT CONTINUES IN MINNESOTA AFTER TARGETED SHOOTINGS IN TWO MINNEAPOLIS SUBURBS KILLED THE SPEAKER OF THE STATE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND HER HUSBAND, AND WOUNDED A STATE SENATOR ALONG WITH HIS WIFE. HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW RIGHT NOW. MINNESOTA STATE REPRESENTATIVE MELISSA HORTMAN AND HER HUSBAND WERE KILLED IN WHAT MINNESOTA GOVERNOR TIM WALZ HAS CALLED A POLITICALLY MOTIVATED ASSASSINATION. THE SHOOTINGS HAPPENED IN THE BROOKLYN PARK AND CHAMPLIN SUBURBS AND ALSO LEFT STATE SENATOR JOHN HOFFMAN AND HIS WIFE INJURED. MY PRAYERS ALSO GO OUT TO STATE SENATOR JOHN HOFFMAN AND HIS WIFE, YVETTE, WHO WERE EACH SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES. THE HOFFMAN’S ARE OUT OF SURGERY AT THIS TIME AND RECEIVING CARE, AND WE ARE CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC, OPTIMISTIC THEY WILL SURVIVE THIS ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT. BOTH VICTIMS ARE MEMBERS OF THE MINNESOTA DEMOCRATIC-FARMER-LABOR PARTY. POLICE HAVE IDENTIFIED THE SUSPECT AS 57 YEAR OLD VANCE BELCHER, AND SAY HE IMPERSONATED LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FLED AFTER EXCHANGING GUNFIRE WITH OFFICERS AT HARTMAN’S HOME. KENTUCKY CONGRESSMAN MORGAN MCGARVEY DENOUNCED THE ATTACK. I MEAN, IT’S SO AWFUL AND HORRIFYING. IT HITS CLOSE TO HOME. YOU KNOW, WHEN I WAS IN THE STATE SENATE, WE HAD A DEATH THREAT AND THE POLICE KNOCKED ON OUR DOOR. THE IDEA THAT THESE LAWMAKERS WENT TO THEIR HOME, KNOCKED ON THE DOOR THINKING IT WAS THE POLICE, PROBABLY ALREADY SCARED. AND THEN ONE WAS ASSASSINATED AND THE OTHER ONE WAS ASSASSINATED. THIS IS WRONG ON EVERY SINGLE LEVEL. EVERY SINGLE PERSON SHOULD CONDEMN IT, AND NO ONE SHOULD NORMALIZE THIS KIND OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE. KENTUCKY’S OTHER ELECTED OFFICIALS HAVE ISSUED STATEMENTS AS WELL. REPUBLICAN STATE SENATOR ROBERT STIVERS SAYS THESE HEINOUS MURDERS IN MINNESOTA ARE UNFORGIVABLE AND INEXCUSABLE, CALLING FOR EXTREME VIOLENT BEHAVIOR TO STOP AND FOR POLITICAL RHETORIC TO BE TONED DOWN. LOUISVILLE MAYOR CRAIG GREENBERG SAYS, QUOTE, OUR HEARTS ARE WITH THE FAMILIES OF THE MINNESOTA ELECTED OFFICIALS WHO ARE ASSASSINATED AND INJURED EARLIER TODAY. RACHEL AND I KNOW FAR TOO WELL THE DEEP AND LASTING TOLL GUN VIOLENCE TAKES. IT DOESN’T JUST AFFECT THE VICTIMS AND THEIR LOVED ONES. IT ALSO SHAKES ENTIRE COMMUNITIES. AND A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY OF KENTUCKY SAYS, QUOTE, THE WORDS WE USE MATTER. AND WE SHOULD ALL REMEMBER THAT WHAT ONE MIGHT CONSIDER MERE RHETORIC MAY BE TAKEN BY UNSTABLE INDIVIDUALS AS A CALL TO ACTION. AND GOVERNOR ANDY BESHEAR ALSO SHARED A STATEMENT. HEARING THE TERRIBLE NEWS OUT OF MINNESOTA THIS MORNING. WHILE WE WAIT TO LEARN MORE, I HOPE YOU’LL JOIN BRITTANY AND ME IN PRAYING FOR THE FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES AFFECTED.
