Where is earthquake risk highest in the Dominican Republic?

Santo Domingo.-Following the 5.8-magnitude earthquake northeast of Punta Cana at 10:45 p.m. on Monday, June 23, concern has grown across the country. In response, geologist Osiris de León emphasized that the northern Dominican Republic faces the highest risk of a major seismic event.
According to De León, this heightened threat is primarily linked to the northern Hispaniola fault, which has caused six of the ten most powerful earthquakes in the island’s history. He clarified that this fault should not be confused with the Septentrional fault, which passes through areas like Navarrete, Santiago, San Francisco de Macorís, and Samaná.
De León also raised concerns about structural vulnerabilities, particularly in the Cibao Valley, where many buildings are constructed on soft or flexible soils. These conditions increase the risk of severe damage due to seismic amplification, also known as the “site effect.” As reported by Hoy newspaper, he urged greater public awareness and stronger preparedness measures in these high-risk zones.
