Colorado Springs gun shop responds to two new gun laws taking effect July 1st
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Starting July 1st, two new gun laws will take effect. One law, HB24-1174, requires additional training for those seeking a concealed carry license, and another, HB24-1353, mandates that gun businesses obtain a state-issued permit to operate.
Senator Jeff Bridges, Arapahoe County, commented on HB24-1353, saying, “It will ensure that every employee in every store knows what our state laws are, and that they follow them. It’s an important way to keep our communities safe, keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them, and give Colorado the basic oversight it needs over these stores.”
Another lawmaker commented on the concealed carry law, now requiring live-fire training to acquire the license.
“The data is clear - live-fire gun training can save lives,” said Majority Leader Monica Duran, Wheat Ridge. “States that have eliminated their live-fire training requirements to receive a concealed carry permit saw 32 percent in gun assaults."
But one gun shop in Colorado Springs, Spartan Defense, opposed both laws. He said the law requiring state permits for businesses is redundant and a waste of taxpayer money.
Teddy Collins said, “This is already done by the federal government. The ATF does this with great efficiency. There’s no reason for there to be additional state bureaucracy on top of the fed, creating more red tape for businesses to be businesses. ”
He also commented on the concealed carry law as well.
“Bad guys are gonna be bad guys. Let’s not disarm the good guys and making it more difficult for people to get a means to defend themselves against evil,” Collins said.
If a business does not have its state-issued permit by July 1st, it will be hit with a $250,000 fine.
