A North Providence family is mourning the loss of a 2-year-old boy who was killed in a hit-and-run crash while visiting family in the Dominican Republic earlier this month.

According to a GoFundMe page created by the mother’s employer, Eyren Ezequiel Brito Pacheco was in a parking lot with his grandmother and great-grandmother when a driver recklessly reversed into all three of them. The child died at the scene. Both women were seriously injured and are still recovering.

Family members say the driver accidentally pressed the gas instead of the brake. The driver initially fled but was later located and taken into custody.

Eyren’s mother, Ambar, is a real estate agent with Real Vision Properties in Cranston. She had stayed behind in Rhode Island while her husband and children visited relatives in the Dominican Republic.

“It’s probably one of the toughest things I ever heard about,” said Matthew Patty, managing partner of Real Vision Properties. “Especially—we have a 2-year-old at home as well ourselves.”

Patty said the team launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the family with funeral costs, travel expenses, and time off work.

“We’re around $3,000 in, so we’ve got a little ways to go,” he said, referencing the fundraiser’s $16,000 goal. As of Wednesday afternoon, it had raised more than $2,700.

Ambar’s coworkers describe her as a devoted mom and a rising star in the real estate business.

“She’s got a big smile. Everybody likes her. She’s a good mom,” Patty said. “We’re just hoping and praying for the best for them.”

Patty said the team is doing what they can to support Ambar through an unimaginable time.

“Hopefully the silver lining for Ambar and for her family is knowing they’re not alone,” he said.

A funeral service for Eyren was held in the Dominican Republic over the weekend.
