Puppy found dead, other dogs seized in Nevada County animal cruelty investigation
A Nevada County man was arrested and several dogs were seized during an investigation into a dog fight, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies responded to the property in the 17000 block of Greenhorn Road in Grass Valley on Monday to conduct a welfare check. The property has more than one home and multiple inhabitants.
The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of 48-year-old Felix Luis Gonzalez Cruz.
Officials said that when deputies arrived at the property, they found two of Gonzalez Cruz's eight dogs outside. One of the dogs was tied up without access to food or water, and another was roaming. One of those dogs had been involved in a fight with another dog, who had a different owner, on the property. The other owner's dog needed medical attention.
Beyond the dogs outside, the sheriff's office said deputies entered Gonzalez Cruz's residence and found a mother dog with five puppies.
"The residential conditions were found to be deplorable and covered in feces, urine and trash, and lacked water and food," the Nevada County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
One of the puppies had died, officials said. It appeared the puppy had been dead inside the residence for some time.
Gonzalez Cruz was arrested for depriving animals of necessary sustenance and causing needless suffering and for resisting arrest.
The sheriff's office said animal control officers seized all of Gonzalez Cruz's remaining dogs. They were taken to the shelter Sammie's Friends. Anyone interested in fostering or adopting one of the dogs can call 530-471-5041.
