CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – With the Fourth of July weekend just around the corner, boaters are gearing up for fun on the water. But Tennessee officials say safety has to come first.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is once again taking part in Operation Dry Water. This is an annual nationwide crackdown on boating under the influence.

From July 4th through the 6th, TWRA officers will be out in force, watching closely for anyone operating a boat while impaired.

We heard from David Holt, TWRA Boating Officer, and this is what he told News 12:

“We want to ensure that everybody this holiday weekend has a great time out there. A great time seeing the wonderful, beautiful stuff. We have a great state of Tennessee, more specifically here in Hamilton County, and we want to make sure that everybody goes on the water that day and comes home at the end of the day.”

Alcohol is the leading factor in recreational boating deaths. And experts say sun, wind, and motion can intensify the effects of drugs and alcohol, putting everyone on board at greater risk.

In Tennessee, boating with a BAC of .08 or higher is illegal, and penalties can include jail time, fines, impoundments, and even losing your boating privileges.

Austin Garrett, Hamilton County Sheriff, told News 12 that “If you intend to consume alcohol, make your plans ahead of time. Don’t wait until you and your judgment are impaired, and you are under the influence to decide how you’re gonna get home safely.”

TWRA encourages everyone to celebrate responsibly and help keep Tennessee’s waterways safe this holiday weekend.
