Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland Now Offers Non-Invasive HIFU for Prostate Cancer

HIFU, high intensity focused ultrasound, is an outpatient procedure for killing prostate tissue in patients with localized prostate cancer and has less risk of side effects than surgery or radiation

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 04, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Legacy Good Samaritan, a dedicated community leader and a medical center of national acclaim, has partnered with HIFU Prostate Services, LLC (HPS), to bring HIFU as a treatment option for localized prostate cancer to the Portland area. HPS is the leading provider of HIFU technology to physician practices in the United States.

“At Legacy Good Samaritan we are committed to making Portland a better, healthier place to live. We are proud to add HIFU to the list of procedures we offer for patients in our community because it offers men an outpatient, less invasive treatment option for prostate cancer,” said Jonathan Avery, President of Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center.

HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to rapidly heat and destroy tissue in the prostate. It is an accurate and precise procedure that eliminates prostatic tissue without damaging areas around the prostate. This greatly reduces the risk of side effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction commonly seen with more invasive treatments.

Stanley Myers, MD, a urologist with Northwest Urology in Portland, treated the first patient at Legacy Good Samaritan this past week and is the most experienced HIFU physician in the pacific northwest. Dr. Myers has been using HIFU for nearly ten years to treat patients with prostate cancer.

"Thanks to the preparation, hard work, and attention to detail by the OR team, the procedure went extremely well,” said Dr. Myers. “The patient awoke with no pain and went home a few hours after the HIFU procedure.”

Last summer, a Medicare code was issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that may help some patients cover part of the cost of the HIFU procedure. Additional information about reimbursement may be found at https://www.hifuprostateservices.com/reimbursement.

“The number of hospitals and medical centers that offer HIFU in the US continues to grow which clearly exhibits the increasing adoption of HIFU as a treatment option for localized prostate cancer. We look forward to working with Legacy Good Samaritan to offer HIFU in their hospital,” said John Linn, chief executive officer, HIFU Prostate Services.

As a one-time, outpatient procedure, HIFU allows patients to return home the same day as their procedure and return to their normal lifestyle within a few days. HIFU may be repeated, if necessary, and can be used to treat patients that have failed radiation therapy.
