Russia Unleashes Largest Aerial Barrage Since Invasion, Ukraine Reports

Moscow’s overnight strike—its largest of the war—devastates civilian areas and escalates drone warfare as diplomacy stalls.

Russia executed its most extensive aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began, launching over 500 drones and missiles in a sweeping overnight operation that hit multiple regions, including areas far removed from the battlefield, Ukrainian officials reported Sunday.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Moscow deployed 537 aerial weapons during the assault—477 of them drones or decoys, and 60 missiles. Defenders intercepted 249 and electronically jammed another 226, though dozens still struck targets across the country.

The saturation attack reached western Ukraine, with one of the largest hits in the Lviv region. A drone strike ignited a fire at an industrial facility in Drohobych and severed power to surrounding neighborhoods.

In the south, at least two civilians were killed in separate drone incidents. A strike in the Kherson region claimed one life, and another victim died in the Kharkiv region when a drone struck a vehicle, according to regional authorities. Six people, including a child, were injured in Cherkasy during a separate wave of attacks.

Ukrainian air command confirmed that one F-16 fighter jet—recently supplied by Western partners—was lost after sustaining damage while intercepting Russian aerial targets. The pilot was killed in the crash.

Neighboring Poland scrambled jets as a precautionary measure amid the barrage, coordinating with NATO allies to protect its airspace amid the intensifying regional threat.

In Russia, officials said they downed seven Ukrainian drones over the Bryansk region, with two people injured during a related strike in the area. Russia’s Ministry of Defense also claimed to have shot down three Ukrainian drones elsewhere overnight.

Moscow announced Sunday that its forces had seized control of the village of Novoukrainka in the contested Donetsk region. The claim, if confirmed, would mark another incremental advance along the 1,000-kilometer front line, where recent gains have come at high cost to Russian forces in both personnel and equipment.

The scale of the overnight bombardment coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s remarks two days earlier, expressing readiness to resume direct peace negotiations in Istanbul. However, two previous rounds of such talks ended swiftly with no progress, and the conflict continues to escalate.

Drone warfare has become a central feature of the conflict, with both Ukraine and Russia deploying increasingly advanced and destructive unmanned systems. The war has become a live laboratory for aerial combat innovation, driving the proliferation of remote weaponry and rendering traditional front lines increasingly porous.

As Moscow’s tactics grow more aggressive and Ukrainian defenses are pushed to their limits, Western diplomatic efforts have yet to yield a path toward de-escalation. The latest assault underscores the widening reach of the war and the diminishing prospects for a negotiated end.
